Our educational program for children 5-13 picks up on Felix Adler’s motto of “deed before creed” by using community service as the basis for learning ethics.
Children learn that one person can make a difference through the projects we perform throughout the year, such as environmental cleanups, making cards for shut-ins and veterans, helping to feed the homeless and recycling bicycles for children in other countries. Critical thinking, responsibility, and understanding right from wrong are some of the values we reinforce and connect to the philosophy, history and “heroes” of the Ethical Culture movement.
Our children also learn about other religions, what they say about ethical action and contrast other religious beliefs with the Humanist philosophy through timeless questions about good and evil and helping others.
And each February, the Sunday School hosts Darwin Day, a celebration of science that reflects our belief in the responsible stewardship of Earth.
Children under age 5 spend the hour with an experienced sitter, enjoying collaborative play and storytime. Upon reaching age 13, they celebrate their “Coming of Age” and transition into YES Group for teens 13-18.
