To care for anyone else enough
to make their problems one's own,
is ever the beginning of one's
real ethical development.

Event

Greg Sandow: The importance of Music in affirming who we are (via Zoom)

02 Apr 2023 | 11:00 am

Some issues that could come up:

Extraordinary more than $500 million cost of renovating Geffen Hall, for the NY Philharmonic, an institution hardly anyone in New York cares about, at a time when we have mammoth social needs

Climate impact of big international music tours

Gigantic ticket price for Bruce Springsteen live shows, when Springsteen has always been thought of (and presented himself) as concerned, ethical, and politically progressive

Decades-long lack of progress in increasing the number of musicians of color in symphony orchestras, despite passionate declarations on the need to do that, and programs aimed at making it happen

Elimination of women composers and performers from past centuries, from classical music history. 18th century documents show there were many. But their names don’t show up in histories of what happened in music then, while even men of minor prominence might be mentioned.

Very worthwhile to think of this.

Another one: the Kennedy Center in DC, where I live, today announcing a festival of art about rivers, specifically because of climate and other environmental concerns. With no mention of the biggest river-related environmental issue in DC, the poisoning of the Anacostia River, which runs through one of DC’s Black communities (where the White people who run the Kennedy Center would never venture).
