A brief letter written by Albert Einstein with brief references to his views on religion made quite a stir in intellectual circles. Titled Einstein’s “God Letter,” it sold at Christie’s last December for $2.9 million.
Eintein’s views are relevant to Ethical Culturists. While Einstein militantly rejected the idea of a supernatural God, he at the same time proclaimed that he was deeply religious man. How he understood religion places him in the same territory as Ethical Culture. Hence Einstein’s views on religion can help us clarify our own. My address will explore what the preeminent genius of modern times meant by God and in what sense Albert Einstein saw religion as fundamental not only to his world-view but also scientific discovery.
