Ageism is pervasive in our society. And consciously or subconsciously, we all perpetuate ageist tropes. Why are these negative messages still acceptable? Unlike other forms of discrimination, we subtly accept ageism with little comment or concern. What’s more, ageism is the only form of prejudice we will all experience, if we live long enough. I’ll explore the the impact of ageism on health, on culture, and on on our values—as well as how to spot it and how to counter it.
Liz Seegert is a veteran freelance health journalist covering aging, health policy, social determinants of health and other key health care issues. Her work has appeared in major media across the U.S., including TIME, PBS/Next Avenue, Consumer Reports, The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, and numerous professional journals. In addition to writing, she mentors early career health reporters for several journalism programs.
Liz was a member of EHSLI from 2009 through 2020, before relocating upstate to the beautiful Hudson Valley.
