These ideas were then be discussed in relation to the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire’s concept of critical social consciousness, (“conscientization” as translated from Portuguese). The presentation concluded with a discussion of the ethical imperative in the age of Trump for consciousness-raising on both the personal and societal levels and how Freire’s “bottom up empowerment” mode of activism can achieve that end.
