Thank you for inviting me to speak at the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. I can be reached at email@example.com. I wanted to add some comments related to the questions. Regarding the Hijra, in 2014, India recognized a third gender with access to government services, and in 2016 they passed a bill prohibiting discrimination against transgender people, however it is still widespread in practice.
J.K. Rowling’s view that transgender women cannot be considered women elicited many responses from her fans, Harry Potter movie actors, the literary community, and the general public. I believe she is entitled to her personal opinion and would not wish to see her books, or any books banned or censored. As an influential author, she might consider the potentially negative effect of her statements on gender minority children, teens, and young adults, and publish a response that takes current attitudes into account.
