To care for anyone else enough
to make their problems one's own,
is ever the beginning of one's
real ethical development.

Kids’ Ethics Program

We believe that the foundation of an ethical and moral life begins with how we treat others and what we contribute to the community.

Our Kids’ Ethics Program for children ages 6-12 is inspired by the motto, Deed before Creed. In class, the children develop vital critical thinking skills through discussion, stories and projects.  Subjects relevant to their lives such as kindness, fairness, and respect in their relationships are an intrinsic part of the curriculum.

In addition, they take part in community service projects, which help less fortunate children and families.

Children learn that one person can make a difference through the projects we perform throughout the year, such as environmental cleanups, making cards for shut-ins and veterans, helping to feed the homeless and recycling bicycles for children in other countries.

Critical thinking, responsibility, and understanding right from wrong are some of the values we reinforce and connect to the philosophy, history and “heroes” of the Ethical Culture movement.

Our children also learn about other religions, what they say about ethical action and contrast other religious beliefs with the Humanist philosophy through timeless questions about good and evil and helping others.

And each February, the Sunday School hosts Darwin Day, a celebration of science that reflects our belief in the responsible stewardship of Earth.

Upon reaching age 13, they celebrate their “Coming of Age” and transition into YES Group for teens 13-18.
